Madama Butterfly (Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, with libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on David Belasco’s play Madame Butterfly, which in turn is based on a short story by John Luther Long. It was composed between 1901 and 1903 and was further revised between 1904 and 1906. It premiered on 17 February 1904 at La Scala in Milan.
