The Sunday Times Style Lecture: Roberto Cavalli
27th May 2008 - £22.50

UNLIKE many fashion designers, Roberto Cavalli is a man whose interests range wide. In fact, compared with his peers, he can be seen as one of fashion’s few renaissance men. He is a painter, qualified pilot, farmer, zoo keeper, wine grower, a twice married family man, as well as a designer for both men and women. But perhaps even more surprising is the fact that everything he does reaches his self-imposed gold standards. Not that his fame was instant, however.

Cavalli had worked as a highly successful designer in Italy for years long before the rest of the world began to sit up and take notice. International fashionistas had barely learned how to pronounce his surname before he had shot up the ladder of Italian fashion and was jostling those other exuberant stars of colour, wit and style, Donatella Versace and Dolce & Gabbana.

From there, it was just a short step to red carpets, It girls and pop stars, not to mention the myriad customers who loved the way his designs made them look - and also feel - supersexy. And it is an upward movement that continues today based, as it always has been, on the Cavalli sense of colour, fabric and cut, all of which combine to bring a unique mixture of drama, grace, raunchiness and glamour to his runway.

The London College of Fashion is situated in the heart of the West End close to London's main shopping district.
