In 1866, Mark Twain was moved to write that his Big Island visit was "an experience of a lifetime!" Your day begins when we pick you up from your Waikiki hotel and take you to the Honolulu Airport where you will board an Island Air flight to Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii.
After your arrival in Hilo, we will take you on a leisurely drive through Hilo Town and visit the beautiful Rainbow Falls. At Volcanoes National Park, visit Kilauea, the worlds most active volcano, with a drive down the Chain of Craters Road, a 20-mile journey that showcases a natural landscape shaped by volcanoes. You will see craters, lava flows, tropical rain forests, mountains, and coastal areas.
At the end of the road, you have the opportunity to hike close to active lava flows, if lava is flowing on the surface or if time permits. (Park rangers will advise if lava is visible and closest viewing area) The walk may be 10 45 minutes, one-way, depending on location of flow. Sturdy, covered walking shoes are recommended. Surface lava flow change direction with only a moments notice, so we cannot predict where it will flow at any given time.
Along the 11-mile Crater Rim Drive that circles the Kilauea Iki Caldera, you will see volcanic steam bluffs and walk inside the Thurston Lava Tube. Visit the Volcano House Observatory and Jagger Volcano Museum. Lunch is on your own at the Volcano House buffet or coffee shop.
After leaving the park, enjoy tropical floral displays at the Akatsuka orchid and anthurium nursery in Hilo and if time permits, we will visit a Macadamia nut factory (seasonal).
Then, its time to fly back from Hilo to Oahu, where we will pick you up from Honolulu Airport for the short drive back to Waikiki.
