To play London with her Tony Award-Winning Show

International legend ELAINE STRITCH plays a strictly limited run at London’s Shaw Theatre this summer. Running from Thursday 31 July – Sunday 10 August, ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY met with great acclaim on Broadway earlier this year when it played the legendary Carlyle Hotel. With Rob Bowman conducting an orchestra, this musical evening traces Stritch’s career, including roles in Company, The Little Foxes, Bus Stop, A Delicate Balance, Sail Away and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

The show received the 2002 Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event, as well as two Drama Desk Awards – Outstanding Solo Performance for Stritch and Outstanding Book of a Musical for Stritch and John Lahr.

Born in Detroit, Elaine Stritch studied in the New School in New York City under the direction of Edwin Piscator. Beginning her career in musical comedy on Broadway, she went from standing by for Ethel Merman in Call Me Madam to her Tony-nominated performance in the revival of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance. Her Broadway credits include Angels in the Wings, Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Bus Stop, Goldilocks, Sail Away (which she performed in both New York and London), and most recently in concert at Carnegie Hall to celebrate Noel Coward’s Centennial), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (following Uta Hagen in the role of Martha), Company and Showboat.

In London’s West End, she starred in Neil Simon’s The Gingerbread Lady and Tennessee Williams’ Small Craft Warnings. Other stage credits include the concert version of both Follies and Company at Lincoln centre and her appearance in A.R Guerney’s Love Letters with Jason Robards. Ms. Stritch made her film debut in the 1957 remake of “A Farewell to Arms.”

About the Theatre

George Bernard Shaw would have been proud of this theatre.

Located near the British Library, the Shaw Theatre has hosted the best. From the brash genius of the Broadway musical, to Van Morrison's dynamic fusion of Celtic and contemporary music, to Harry Connick Jr's inimitable New Orleans' jazz.

Sundays at the Shaw are home to some of London's finest classical musicians in the intimate and immediate setting which is the Shaw Theatre.

The Shaw Theatre continues its outreach into the community in association with its producers, ensuring that a new generation of theatre goers have the opportunity to share the unforgettable experience of live theatre, opera and ballet.
