Based on a popular novel of the day by Sir Walter Scott, Donizetti's opera concerns the young Lucia Ashton, who has fallen in love with Edgardo Ravenswood, the scion of a family long regarded as the Ashton's greatest enemy. By numerous duplicitous means, Lucia's brother Enrico persuades her that Edgardo has been unfaithful to her. He further persuades her that a marriage to Arturo Bucklaw would form an alliance that would save the dwindling family fortune. Numbed by Edgardo's apparent infidelity and fearful of a marriage to Arturo she does not want, Lucia loses her grip on sanity and murders Arturo on their wedding night. She collapses, lifeless, at the end of her famous 'Mad Scene.' Edgardo, hearing of her death, swears he will be united with her before God, then stabs himself.
