Hamlet - the Musical, by Czech hit-maker Janek Ledecký, has become a tremendous success with Prague audiences. It premiered on November 1, 1999, and the occasion coincided with the opening of the Kalich Theater, which later became one of Prague's best-known musical and dramatic venues. For an unbelievable three years, the musical entertained audiences of all generations. A total of 600 sell-out performances were held on the stage of the Kalich Theater. The musical witnessed equal success in Slovakia where it was performed on the new stage of the National Theater in Bratislava.
Hamlet - the Musical owes its success primarily to Ledecký's impressive, intelligent melodies accompanying the story of love and betrayal in the Danish kingdom. An equal degree of credit belongs to the lyrics, which sparkle with a humor and wit that are worthy of their Shakespearian heritage. A first-rate production team stood behind the musical in Prague: The impressive stage was designed by Šimon Caban, the fabulous costumes were the work of Josef Jelínek, the choreography was designed by Zuzana Krištofová, the staging was the work of Jan Kaèer and the piece was directed by the well-known Zdenìk Troška. It is not surprising, therefore, that Hamlet - the Musical attracted the interest of producers on Broadway, the world's musical mecca. After several successful preview performances, the preparations for the American premiere of Hamlet - the Musical are currently underway. Once again, the musical will be in the hands of a superb creative and interpretive team. Director Robert Johanson needs no introduction. As one of the prominent figures in the industry, Johanson is not only a director but also a sought-after actor for musicals. Ledecký teamed up with Johanson and co-producer Vince Parillo to produce the American version of Hamlet - the Musical. In comparison with the Czech version of the musical, new songs were added for the new production, some of the roles were given an additional dramatic boost and, most importantly, the staging of the individual scenes was modified. The new version of Hamlet - the Musical, therefore, promises an interesting theater experience not only for those visiting the Kalich Theater for the first time, but also for those who have already had the chance to see Hamlet - the Musical.
