Oberammergau Passion Play

The last Passion Play held in Oberammergau was in 2000, which was the 40th Passion Play had over 500,000 people in attendance with over 2,200 people in the production. This year also got an interesting twist as the English-speaking visitors represent 50% of the attendees. For 2000 the village of Oberammergau gave Christian Stuckl the task of preparing a new production and also authorized new costumes and the graphics on the back stages were updated. Keith Prowse is delighted to be an official supplier of Passion Play tickets for 2010.

Oberammergau and Obermühle are approximately 50 miles south of Munich, with easy transfers by road or rail . This picturesque village lies in the Ammer Valley surrounded by mountains, meadows and forests and provides the perfect backdrop for the open-air stage at the Passion Play theatre. Oberammergau is also famous for its woodcarving and the traditional Bavarian and religious scenes painted on the facades of many of the buildings.

In 2010 the villagers of Oberammergau will perform for the 41st time, on a new open-air stage to an audience of 5000, seated in state-of-the-art covered seats - enabling performances to go on whatever the weather.

The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play begins in 1633. During the Thirty Years' War, after much suffering and many deaths caused by the plague, the surviving population of Oberammergau vowed that they would perform the "play of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years if they were spared from extinction. Each year the plays have played to capacity audiences – making this an exclusive as well as wonderful occasion.

The 2010 Passion Play, performed in German, runs from May to October. The performance lasts over five hours, however there is a three-hour break for dinner which is provided in our package at a wonderful restaurant in easy walking distance of the theatre. The first part is performed in the afternoon and the second part is performed in the evening with the added effect of the sun setting on the back-drop of mountains. The 41st production includes newly revised text and music especially created for the performance by the composer Rochus Dedler.

In 1820 the venue for the Passion Play was moved to a new open-air stage which was constructed at the site of the current Passion Play theatre. At this time the audience sat on rows of benches but in 1930 proper theatre seating was installed with a capacity of 5200. In 1999 the theatre was completely renovated and in addition to modernising the stage equipment and introducing new fire and safety measures it now has nearly 5000 start-of-the-art covered seats which enable performances to go on whatever the weather.
