Theme and Variations is a tribute to Petipa’s legacy, paying homage to the art and technique of classical dance. Choreographed to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 in G major, it aims to awaken memories of a period of classical dance, during which Russian ballet blossomed along with Tchaikovsky’s music. ‘Theme and Variations’ is one of the Balanchine canon’s most technically demanding pieces and at the same time testament to his extraordinary, still unchallenged, musicality.
