Located 53 miles (85 kilometers) north of Bangkok is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayuthaya - the ancient capital of Siam, between 1350 to 1767. Ayuthaya was once a thriving international commercial center with 33 Kings from various Siamese dynasties ruling their kingdom from here until it was captured by the Burmese. Today, Ayuthaya is know for its spectacular ruins and temples, with many still intact, such as Wat Phra Sanphet and Wat Mongkhon Bophit as well as the bronze statues at Wat Chai Mongkol, known for its large statue of the Reclining Buddha, and Wat Panangcherng.A journey to the ancient Siamese capital of Ayuthaya is a highlight of any visit to Thailand. On this full day, guided excursion from Bangkok you have a choice of visiting Thailand’s former ancient capital by boat and returning to Bangkok by van, or vice-versa. A river boat journey is a must when in Bangkok as it allows you a close up view of life on the river, which serves as a natural highway for many of Bangkok’s residents. During the boat cruise to / from Ayuthaya you will also get close-up views of the many temples and historical sites that sit along the Chao Phraya River, such as Wat Arun.
At Ayuthaya - named after Ayodhya in northern India, the city of the hero Rama in the Hindu epic Ramayana - you will also see the summer palace of King Rama IV with its mixture of Thai, Chinese and Gothic architecture. The Palace is a well preserved 'museum' providing you with a glimpse into a time when the country was known as Siam.
