The Servant of Two Masters is a ripe fruit of commedia dell'arte – it includes the traditional characters and situations. It is set in a close family framework where the main event of a betrothal is complicated by the servant Truffaldino, who is both cunning and simple-minded at the same time. He plays out a comedy of errors and misunderstandings driven by his eternal hunger through unexpected peripeteia and on to a happy ending. He is surrounded by traditional figures – the masks of commedia dell'arte – the careworn fogy Pantalone, the precocious doctor and their beloved children, the adventurous pair of lovers, the innkeeper Brighella and the servant Smeraldina. In our production, Truffaldino is played by Miroslav Donutil, who has developed the tradition of improvisation from commedia dell'arte to the great enjoyment of many theatregoers. The production has been in the repertoire for over a decade. In 2006, it celebrated its 350th performance and still plays to full houses at the National Theatre. (The only production in the history of the National Theatre which has had more performances – 403 – is Örkény’s Cat’s Play with Dana Medřická in the lead role.)
