Making its long-awaited debut at the London Coliseum, Ballet Nacional de Cuba presents two programmes, which showcase the company’s unparalleled technique and extraordinary flair for invigorating Western ballets with vivid Cuban passion.

Magia de la Danza is a mixed bill which brings together extracts from seven of the company's most famous ballets including the Nutcracker, Coppélia and Swan Lake. The full programme is:

Giselle Pas de Deux (Act II)
Sleeping Beauty Polonesa and Grand Pas de Deux (Act III)
The Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers and Grand Pas de Deux (Act II)

Dance or ballet: One of ballet's most famous works with some of its best known music. It is Siegfried's birthday and his mother gives him a crossbow and an ultimatum to get married! After the party and finding himself alone he goes hunting. The evil magician Rothbart (half man half bird) keeps beautiful women as swans on the lake - but by night they resume human form. Siegfried is bewitched by Odette, a Princess and one of the Swans. She explains their plight to Siegfried and says the spell can only be broken by someone who'll love her truly for ever. He swears to do so but Odette returns to being a swan as Rothbart's powers are so strong. Siegfried returns to the palace and his mother presents him with a string of women from whom to chose his bride - Rothbart arrives with his daughter Odile disguised as Odette and Siegfried agrees to marry her - only then realising his mistake as Odile reviles him for breaking his vow to Odette. Siegfried returns to the lake and begs Odette to forgive him - then fights Rothbart whom he kills - and the swans are released from the spell.

ENO takes advantage of owning what is arguably London’s finest stage for dance to present two iconic works of 20th-century art. Following his South Bank Show Award-winning production of Birtwistle’s Punch & Judy at the Young Vic, Daniel Kramer makes his London Coliseum debut directing Bartók’s only opera, with Michaela Martens as the wife who sacrifices herself in seeking to unlock the secrets of her husband’s bloody past. Michael Keegan-Dolan directs his Olivier Award-nominated dance theatre company, Fabulous Beast, in Stravinsky’s darkly ritualistic ballet, in which a young girl is sacrificed on the altar of her community’s future.
Presiding over a hugely expanded orchestra, ENO Music Director Edward Gardner conducts what promises to be a doubly explosive evening.

Giselle is the ultimate Romantic ballet, a tale of innocence, betrayal and the redemptive power of true love. English National Ballet’s traditional staging of this 1841 masterpiece moves from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a ghostly, moonlit world of mystery and menace.

Giselle is in love with the handsome Duke Albrecht, but when she discovers that he has deceived her she dies of a broken heart. By Giselle’s grave in a mist-wreathed forest glade, vengeful spirits of abandoned brides force men to dance to their death. Giselle returns as a ghost, and her deep love for Albrecht saves him from this fate.

Adolphe Adam’s music, played by English National Ballet’s symphony orchestra, is an exquisite accompaniment to the thoroughly magical choreography.
