The world's greatest operetta festival takes place on one of the most beautiful open-air stages in Europe. The appropriate setting is given by the picturesque town of Moerbisch and the impressive natural scenery of the " Neusiedler See " sixty kilometers away from Vienna. The plot of Der Zarewitsch is loosely based on a true story: the self imposed exile of the son of Peter the Great, Alexei, who shirked his father's command by running away to Naples with his Finnish mistress disguised as a page. The couple spent two years galavanting around until Alexei was compelled by his father to return. His father was paranoid that Alexei was conspiring against him and ultimately Alexei ended up being imprisoned and tortured. The Russian senate convicted him of conspiring against his father and he was sentenced to death. He died due to ill health before he could be executed, most likely resulting from the poor treatment he received while imprisoned.

Dieser erwidert Mimis Liebe zunachst, wendet sich dann aber immer mehr dem ungezwungenen Leben der Boheme zu und verliert das kranke Madchen aus den Augen. Kurz vor Mimis Tod kommt es zu einem Wiedersehen.

The fairy tale Hansel and Gretel is one of the most popular tales of the Brothers Grimm. Engelbert Humperdincks fairy-tale opera of the same name, first performed in Weimar in 1893, enjoyed a similar popularity. Librettist Adelheid Wette, the composers sister, made a number of changes in her treatment of the material. Hansel and Gretel accidentally break a jug of milk while playing. Their mother, who had planned to use the milk for making porridge, sends them into the forest to pick some berries for supper instead. The children get lost in the forest and ultimately end up in the clutches of a gingerbread witch who has already caught a host of other children and turned them into gingerbread. She has similar plans for Hansel and Gretel: baking the boy in the oven and making a maidservant out of the girl. With a bit of cunning the two children manage to foil the evil witchs plans, freeing not only themselves but all the gingerbread children.

Though its catchy motifs clearly reveal the influence of Wagner, Humperdincks score attains an expressiveness all its own. The inventive melodies suggest a deep-rootedness in German folk culture, whereas, in fact, Humperdinck borrowed directly from only three folk songs.

Oscar Straus' Nibelungen-Persiflage wurde nach der Uraufführung am 12. November 1904 im Wiener Carltheater stürmisch bejubelt.

Militärisches Imponiergehabe und germanische Überheblichkeit stehen im Mittelpunkt des parodistischen Geschehens.

Musikalisch setzt sich der Komponist immer wieder humorvoll mit dem großen Vorbild Richard Wagner auseinander.

Als Straus 1916 die Leitung des Ronacher übernahm, eröffnete er mit den "Lustigen Nibelungen", seinem Lieblingsstück.

Die Neuproduktion an der Volksoper liegt in Händen von Direktor Robert Meyer, der damit erstmals an seinem Haus Regie führt.
