After an absence of 30 years Jerome Robbins’s great work Dances at a Gathering makes an exciting return to The Royal Ballet. To solo piano works by Chopin, ten dancers explore the potential of dance itself through shifting relationships that also reflect the moods of the music’s mazurkas, waltzes and études. With virtuoso technique and individual character at the heart of its creation, every performance of Dances by The Royal Ballet will be a unique experience to savour.

There’s a strong contrast in the second work of the programme, The Dream: with Shakespeare’s story of a midsummer’s night, Mendelssohn’s delightfully delicate music and Frederick Ashton’s ever-popular choreography. In its magic world of night and within its evocative woodland setting, Oberon and Titania play their games with the unwitting mortals, while the comic confusions of love are aggravated by the mischievous Puck.

Felicity Lott(Marschallin) makes a welcome return to sing one of her most acclaimed roles, Angelika Kirchschlager (Octavian) returns after her praised creation last Season of the title role in Sophie’s Choice, and the German soprano Simone Nold(Sophie) makes her Royal Opera debut. And what of Baron Ochs (Kurt Rydl), the intended husband for Sophie? Pompous and egocentric – as when he so rudely interrupts the Italian Singer (Piotr Bezcala, making his Royal Opera debut) – in the tricks and confusions of the final act of this ‘comedy in music’ Ochs is exposed as a philanderer and a most unsuitable suitor. Along the way, the character of 1830s Paris is created through John Copley's now-classic production and Julia Trevelyan Oman's authentic designs; both these heighten the colour of Puccini's own score, with its street urchins, lively café and evocative portrayal of the changing seasons of one tragic year.

Robert Lepage’s recent production of Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress takes The Royal Opera to Hollywood for its first Covent Garden appearance. Hogarth’s depiction of a young man’s dramatic seduction and corruption by a pleasure-loving society gains a new twist through celebrity culture in the Los Angeles world of movies and television. From star of the silver screen to bankruptcy and madness, it’s all part of an inevitable downward cycle for the ‘hero’ Tom Rakewell. Stravinsky’s opera is one of the most performed of all modern operas, not least for its fascinating mix of elements – 18th-century with a 20th-century twist – and will be one big operatic rollercoaster of a ride, not least with Thomas Adès conducting a cast lead by Charles Castronovo, Sally Matthews and John Relyea.
