The New York Philharmonic is by far the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. Founded in 1842 by a group of local musicians led by American-born Ureli Corelli Hill, the Orchestra currently plays some 180 concerts a year. On December 18, 2004, the Philharmonic gave its 14,000th concert — a milestone unmatched by any other orchestra in the world.
LORIN MAAZEL ~ A GRAND FINALE
For more than 50 years he has stood as one of the masters of our era. For the last six, he has stood before audiences as the leader of this famed Orchestra. He has taken it to new heights, and has exemplified the artistry and passion that is the New York Philharmonic.
He is Lorin Maazel, and this is his final season as our Music Director. Befitting the occasion, we present a truly extraordinary season that can best be described in one word: epic. A season filled with powerful, dramatic performances. The kind for which Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic are so justly renowned.
